INDUSTRIAL JP have been touring around factories in all parts of Japan, to collect movements, sounds and rhythms of machines that are used for manufacturing all kinds of parts. From the elements they collect, they create music videos together with musicians. The precise operations of machine tools, and the rhythms of their movements, are expressed through beautiful sounds and visuals. The appeal of factories in Japan is further communicated through displays of actual products made at the factories, which inspired the respective works, and photographs that document what is made at those factories, and who is operating the machines.
INDUSTRIAL JP is an industrial music label that was launched in 2016 by a group of individuals who love the sounds and rhythms, and shiny, oil-covered machine tools at factories.
They record and sample operation sounds and images of machines at factories across Japan, create pieces of music in collaboration with musicians and track makers, and distribute music videos. Inspired by the desire to communicate the appeal of Japanese factories, and at the same time, help invigorate the domestic manufacturing industry, the label posts interviews with people at the factories on their website, which functions as a platform for showcasing the advanced technology at those factories, and the appeal of their state-of-the-art products.
The continuous rhythms of the working machines, covered with oil but gloriously shiny and operating precisely, are translated into beautiful sounds and imagery.
For this exhibition, three factories were selected from among the group’s previous work, to be introduced through combinations of product samples, still and moving images.
